What is comprehensive continence assessment?
A comprehensive continence assessment is a detailed assessment:
- of how your bladder and bowel are working
- of any issues you have getting to, or using, the toilet
- to work out if you have incontinence and what type of incontinence you have.
This helps our Nurse Continence Specialist to find out what is causing the continence issues and what’s the best way to treat it.
There are many different things that can cause problems with passing urine and faeces. Some people can be cured with the right treatment. For other people, the problem may not be able to be cured but can be better managed.
Preparing for your appointment
There are some steps we recommend you take beforehand.
Prior to your home visit, it can be helpful for you to complete a bowel and bladder diary over a minimum of 3 days. This will help our Nurse Continence Specialist gain a better understanding of your continence health.
What happens after your assessment?
Once the type of incontinence and causes or reasons why you might be experiencing incontinence have been identified, the Nurse Continence Specialist will prescribe continence aids and tailor a management plan with you to suit your goals and needs.
